Some thoughts on commissions and portraiture

Over the years commissioned work has served as a rewarding augmentation of my main body of work produced for exhibition.
Commissioned work has allowed me to exercise my painting abilities physically as well as expand my range thematically. Each piece is composed slowly, in close collaboration with my clients. I want to paint a portrait of their lives, not just what they looked like on a given day of that life.
Knowing where the painting will hang and getting to know its future owner(s) affords me an exploration of alternative compositions, color schemes and methods of painting. Learning about my subjects' own worlds and coming to know them both as individuals and visually only adds to the strength of the portrait and eventually to my exhibited body of work.
